A Tale of Diplomacy, Disinformation, and National Dignity
In a world governed by optics, global summits like the G-7
have long served as symbols of influence, diplomacy, and geopolitical
relevance. When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided not to attend the
latest G-7 Summit hosted by Canada, the absence sparked a flurry of narratives,
particularly from India’s opposition parties. Yet beneath the surface lies a
complex web of diplomacy, historical injustice, strategic autonomy, and
media-fueled misdirection. This article explores the deeper reasons behind
India’s conscious decision to stay away, and how misinformation is being
weaponized in the global and domestic political arena.
The Congress Party’s Manufactured Outrage
India’s principal opposition, the Indian National Congress
(INC), quickly pounced on Modi’s absence from the G-7, labeling it a
“diplomatic failure.” Ironically, this is the same Congress that signed a
controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Communist Party of
China (CCP) in 2008, raising serious questions about its allegiance and
geopolitical understanding.
The Congress narrative insinuated that India had been
sidelined by the global powers and criticized the Modi government for allegedly
allowing U.S. mediation in the India-Pakistan conflict. However, facts tell a
different story. India’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) has
publicly confirmed that it was Pakistan who first reached out via the military
hotline, pleading for a ceasefire following India’s firm retaliatory strikes.
The U.S. President at the time, Donald Trump, may have made public comments
suggesting mediation, but such remarks are best understood as rhetorical
diplomacy rather than actionable foreign policy.
G-7 Invitation Politics: Not as Simple as It Seems
A key point ignored in the outrage is that India is not a
permanent member of the G-7, and its invitation as a guest nation depends on
the discretion of the host country. Canada, this year’s host, did not extend a
formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi. Reports suggest India may not have
confirmed representation due to the strained diplomatic relations with Canada,
and understandably so.
Even if a last-minute invitation had arrived, India was
unlikely to participate due to unresolved tensions. The Canadian government’s
inaction on anti-India elements and their safe harbouring of extremists are
well-documented, raising serious concerns about the summit’s integrity and
security.
Canada’s Tarnished Record: A History of Injustice
Canada has often portrayed itself as a liberal, human
rights-loving nation, but its record tells a different story. One of the
darkest stains in this context is the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182. The
aircraft exploded mid-air over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 329 people on
board. The bombing, attributed to the Khalistani terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa
and the International Sikh Youth Federation, originated from Canadian soil.
Despite overwhelming evidence, the Canadian government
failed to bring the culprits to justice. Many of those involved or sympathetic
to the attackers allegedly had connections with elements within the Canadian
political system. Even decades later, the lack of accountability sends a
chilling message about Canada’s seriousness in combating terrorism.
Global Conspiracies and the Media's Role
Global geopolitics is not free from manipulation. Narratives
are often sculpted not by facts, but by interests—economic, political, or
ideological. Western nations have repeatedly used summits like the G-7 to
signal power blocs and isolate rising nations like Indi when it suits them.
The mainstream media, both domestic and international, plays
a vital role in shaping perceptions. In this case, segments of the Indian media
quickly amplified the Congress party’s statements, portraying the G-7 absence
as a snub rather than a strategic choice. This method of repeating falsehoods
in cycles is a classic psychological operation: say a lie often enough, and it
starts sounding like the truth.
Operation Sindoor and Security Prioritization
Another factor being conveniently ignored is India’s ongoing
military readiness and heightened border tensions. Operation Sindoor, a
large-scale strategic defense initiative, is still underway. A temporary
ceasefire does not mean peace. In such a critical phase, it is unwise and
perhaps even irresponsible for the head of state to attend a distant summit in
a diplomatically hostile environment.
Given the security concerns, especially on Canadian soil,
Modi’s absence becomes a matter of prudence, not petulance.
The Bigger Picture: A More Assertive India
India’s refusal to attend the G-7 summit should not be seen
as retreat or exclusion—it is a bold signal of sovereign decision-making. The
country is emerging as a global leader, willing to chart its own course,
refusing to be co-opted into symbolic gestures that do not serve its national
interests.
This is not a time for manufactured outrage or media
manipulation. It is a time to celebrate India’s rising stature, its commitment
to national security, and its refusal to be bullied—diplomatically or
narratively—by old power structures and their cheerleaders.
Time to Rethink What Matters
The G-7 Summit may be an important global event, but
participation must be based on mutual respect, trust, and strategic alignment.
India’s decision to stay away was a mature, calculated move reflecting both
geopolitical realities and moral clarity.
Rather than criticizing this choice, Indians should
recognize it for what it is: a sovereign nation standing tall, putting national
interest above symbolic appearances, and refusing to bend under
pressure—domestic or foreign.
